WASHINGTON, May 29, 2013 —Less than two weeks after Moore, Oklahoma was devastated by a massive tornado, Blake Shelton has organized a benefit that includes some of the biggest names in the music industry. “Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert” will air live tonight at 9/8c on NBC as well as on cable networks Style, G4, Bravo, and E! on either a live or a delayed basis. The show’s all-star lineup includes Miranda Lambert, Reba, Vince Gill, Rascal Flatts, Luke Bryan, Ryan Tedder, Usher, Darius Rucker and more. Tickets went on sale May 25th and were sold out in less than one minute. Yes, you read that right, the show sold out in less than one minute. With a ticket price of $25 to see this star studded lineup, no doubt the extra tickets will go just as fast.
Keeping the ticket price low so all Oklahomans could attend was a priority of Shelton’s, giving us yet another reason to adore one of this country’s greatest entertainers. Since tonight’s benefit will be the third concert for tornado victims in Oklahoma that Shelton has taken part in, organizing these events has become almost second nature for him. Shelton and fellow country star Reba raised $500,000 with two sold out concerts for victims of the Atoka County tornadoes in 2011. The way Americans respond to victims of disaster is nothing short of phenomenal. From the first responders who run to the devastation instead of away from it to the many who will make contributions tonight, we all want to help in our own way. For a moment in time the destructive division that exists in this country gives way to our better nature. We don’t identify ourselves as Republicans or Democrats. Instead we see our fellow Americans in need and we respond with kindness and concern. What they will see instead is what this country is capable of when the politicians shut up and get out of the way. Now if we could only figure out a way to shut them up completely and replace their divisive rhetoric with that All-American sense of purpose and commonality that will prevail tonight, we may still have a chance to salvage this country before it’s too late.
